Cheers everyone, I knew I'd be made welcome!

I never thought I'd be a Metro driver, but as my previous car had been pronounced dead in the MOT bay I was in a hurry to get on the road again. I saw this car for sale at the side of the road as the owner was now too arthritic to drive it. It seemed a good emergency buy, 33,000 miles, 12 months Mot and 12 months tax =£300. Good job I thought so as the seller had had absolutely no interest in it. He'd been told by a friend in the motor trade that the only way to shift it was to break it up for parts, fortunately I got to it about a week before that happened.

A year on and I don't think I could easily part with it. I love the handling, I love the cavernous bootspace and I love the way it makes a tank of petrol last a month. I just wish more people cared about them! When I asked my local garage if they would give it a service after the Mot they looked at me as if I was mad (they did do it in the end though, plus they remembered to grease the suspension)

We do have a big job to do in convincing the world of the Metro's merits, but we shall win!

Now that the buy-to-let bubble has burst, maybe we should start a rumour that Metros are a good investment for the future! Making money might be the wrong motivation for owning one, but it might stop so many of them being broken for mini restos and give Metros the respect they deserve amongst the general public.

Lovely example you've got there Mike, another one saved by the sound of it.

^^^^ totally agree....

unfortunatley due to the cult status of the mini i don't think the butchering of metros will stop until the prices of minis and metros even out, which as we know will only happen when there isn't many about. i do think we are winning the battle though, there are many more forum members on the internet than there was when i had my first metro a couple of years ago, and my car certainly draws more attention now as there are less and less on the roads.

i'm seriously considering making up a load of "www.metroownersclub.org" business cards, and leaving them on the windscreen of every metro i see. the more metros in the hands of caring owners, the less will be massacred for parts.

again, a lovely example and a bargain at £300!

Some sort of windscreen flyer or card is an excellent idea, initially it could just be something we could print off from this site. Here in Cheshire there's still a good stock of Metros running about, divided into two distinct categories;

1) The all-era rusty runaround that won't dodge the crusher for that much longer,
2) The pristine example that has been so well looked after the rust was never allowed to start.

There doesn't seem to be that much in between. There's a mint some-sort-of-beige Mark 1 that I see occasionally when the weather's fine, and a tidy GTA that gives a toot before accelerating into the distance. These are owners who clearly care enough about their cars to join some sort of community devoted to them, but where are they? I don't think they're already here.

You're right with the categories Mike, there's not much inbetween with the 80s metros, although because they are younger there's still quite a few fair/good condition later metros and R100s knocking about, my 114 falling into this category! I've spotted a mint R114 gta that lives near me and I feel it's my duty to let them know there's a club out there for their car, so will put a note through their door next week.

On the topic of condition, immaculate show cars have their place (especially the rarer models), but I must admit i prefer to see older cars being used regularly. Since buying my beige mk1 recently I've taken good care and kept him garaged, but he's still got to earn his keep by doing shopping runs and trips out, although I'm fortunate enough not to need a car for daily use. And I'm careful where I park...he's got 26 years worth of inconsiderate parking dings from others, that's enough of those I think.
