mk1 'George' up and running

Postby RobT_75 on September 13th, 2008, 11:18 pm

I've just had the last week off work and have finally got around to re-commissioning old George here who's hasn't been run for about 6 years. Work done includes:

-Two days spent waxoyling everywhere, including the driveway (sorry dad, I'll clean it up I promise!). The only areas of concern really are the bottom of the two wings, pic of near side below, and some spots of rust on the bottom of the front valence and wheel arches, jobs for another day i think. I'm yet to reveal the off-side rust, but the tell-tale crack in the black stuff and crunching noise gives it away!

-New Oil, filters and plugs and replaced the coolant. Checked the thermostat worked by doing the boil in a pan test. And it must be the original one as it was made in West Germany.. :) Worked fine though.

Random pics just showing the interior stripped out and the front end.

Work still to do includes freeing up the front brakes as they're binding, do a bit of fiddling with the carb as the old plugs showed it had been running too rich, or atleast I hope that's all it was ;) and then find the time and money to get him MoTd. I'd love to bring him up to Longbridge on the 12th and meet you all, but if I don't get it all done in time will come up in the other half's R114 instead. Mind you, as of today that's off the road too as a brake pressure valve went earlier which meant DOT4 peeing out everywhere, and a tow home from the RAC - it's a good job I renewed my membership last month!

It would be nice to see George on the 12th but
the other halfs car is more than acceptable.
Look forward to seeing you there.

Thanks Jack. I forgot to mention, after all that work he did actually start, albeit after a good 10 minutes. And hearing that familiar old A-series sound made me smile!
